GPS Can Help Your Business

⊆ Friday, April 24, 2009 by kris | ˜ 0 comments »

I went on vacation recently, and during that time I realized how dependent I have become on GPS applications to find what I am looking for. GPS devices maximize my vacation time by letting me drive less, since by using them, I never get lost. And driving less means I'm living a greener life, too.

GPS devices have crept up on us and become a bigger part of our lives without our really noticing it. My family has GPS in our newer car, which comes up as a pop up screen that talks us through our turns. Lots of us also have it on our iPhone to help find an address or business. Having relied on this really great technology for personal use for over five years now, I am kind of surprised that this is the first year that GPS-based applications are really taking off in our mobile computing business. It is here, it works well, and it does save companies money.

There are three types of GPS applications that are really taking off: navigation services, bread crumbing and real-time location. Navigation services is what we all use in rental cars, and now find in most new cars--an application that helps us find out how to get from point a to point b, or how to find the closest gas station or grocery store.

Bread crumbing is an application that pinpoints stops along a route and drops virtual crumbs along the way. This application is used to analyze where a vehicle has been and learn from it. For instance, can we find a better route next time, why did we spend so much time at point C, and are we complying with the business rules and logic that the driver has been taught to comply with? Real-time location usually involves fleets of vehicles, and aids dispatchers in routing that fleet in an optimized fashion.

The benefits of GPS-based applications are truly cost-justifiable, and as fuel costs continue to rise, the importance of optimized routing and driving becomes the wise and green-friendly thing to do. With the relative low cost of these applications and the technology required, the ROI on GPS is rapid, often under 12 months or less. With gas price increases and carbon offsets headed our way, it makes sense to start piloting GPS projects for companies who have vehicles or staff driving while at work.

Tata Communications will introduce telepresence exchange services for Cisco TelePresence, a major expansion of its telepresence services. The Global Meeting Exchange will support meetings between any connected private and public Cisco TelePresence rooms.

Tata Communications is in discussion with a number of regional carriers to collaborate on extending the Global Meeting Exchange into geographically diverse markets. As a result, any business with a connection to the Global Meeting Exchange will have unparalleled access to set up Cisco TelePresence virtual meetings with their ecosystem of users.

Tata Communication's telepresence services include managed private Cisco TelePresence rooms, public TelePresence rooms that can be rented by the hour, and the ability for these private and public rooms to connect with each other. Tata's Global Meeting Exchange will have major telepresence service points of presence (PoPs) in Mumbai, New York, and London and minor points of presence co-resident in Tata's global MPLS PoPs in major cities around the world. Customer connections will be supported at any of many easily reached PoPs and this globally dispersed PoP distribution will ensure optimum performance with short connection paths, said the company.

"The Global Meeting Exchange builds upon our current managed telepresence private network and public room services; our extensive owned data bandwidth across the world; Tata's major national network assets in India, South Africa, and later this year China; and our inter-carrier relationships developed as the number one carrier of international voice calls and one of the largest inter-carrier provider of Internet peering. Our B2B cooperation with Cisco and partner carriers will bring a new level of value demanded by Cisco TelePresence users," said John Landau, senior vice-president, global managed services, Tata Communications.

Naresh Wadhwa, president and country manager, Cisco India, added, "Cisco TelePresence enables companies to improve productivity and reduce expenses while at the same time collaborating more effectively and improving business innovation. We are pleased to be working closely with Tata Communications to bring the benefits of Cisco TelePresence to its customer base."

Why Wait For Windows 7? Get Ubuntu For Free!

⊆ Thursday, April 23, 2009 by kris | ˜ 0 comments »

Ubuntu, the most popular competitor of Windows operating system, will be available for free download this evening. The latest version of Ubuntu is called Jaunty Jackalope, or simply Ubuntu 9.04.

The massive failure of Windows Vista left users angry and desperate for an alternative. While going for Mac is like buying a new piece of land and then build a house on it, what about PCs? Once upon a time, PCs belonged to Microsoft's Windows operating system, but times have changed now. Things are becoming obsolete. PC world is being taken over by GNU/Linux, though at a slower pace. You have heard of the good old rabbit-tortoise story, right?

To give users a fresh breath of free air, Canonical is releasing its latest version of Ubuntu operating system which can run on your current PCs and even Macs. There are many advantages of using Ubuntu or any other GNU/Linux operating systems. The number one priority is freedom. Here you will not be bound by heft end-user licence agreement which will make you a 'pirate', a 'thief' if you give a copy of the software to your brother or a friend. We as humans are programmed to share. Sharing is the basis of our intelligence, but some proprietary companies want to curb this very human trait -- and convert us into their customers. But that's where GNU/Linux sets you free. Here once you download or get a copy of Ubuntu, you are free to replicate it and give it to as many people as you want.

Windows or Macs may cost you bomb, but Ubuntu, like most of the GNU/Linux operating systems, comes for free. You will not have to pay a single penny to get the copy. What's more, if you don't have a good download speed and you want to try Ubuntu, you can order it from their website and they will send it to you for free.

Get your free CD's........

AMD Launches New Flagship Phenom II CPU

⊆ Thursday, April 23, 2009 by kris | ˜ 0 comments »

As was increasingly expected, AMD has officially updated its Phenom II processor line with two new, slightly faster CPUs. The unlocked 3.2 GHz Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition (about $245) supports overclocking and is the company's fastest yet, while the Phenom II X4 945 (about $225) is clock-locked at 3 GHz. AMD says the former flagship 3 GHz AM2+ Phenom II X4 940 BE (about $195) will "remain available as an overclockable Black Edition for a period of time."

The new chips again feature a total cache (L2+L3) of 8MB, and though geared for use with Socket AM3/DDR3-memory motherboards, are also backwards-compatible with AM2+/DDR2-memory systems; so the good news is that you needn't upgrade your entire PC to use them.
